In 2016, French bioacoustics scientist Michel Andre launched Project Providence in collaboration with the Mamiraua Institute for Sustainable Development in Brazil. This initiative is dedicated to monitoring the health of the rapidly deteriorating Amazon rainforest, where approximately 20 percent has already been lost due to climate change and human activities. By utilizing a vast network of acoustic sensors, the project aims to capture the unique sounds of the forest, thereby gaining insights into the ecosystem's status. These sensors can detect subtle changes in animal vocalizations that often indicate environmental stress before visible signs become apparent. The partnership between Michel Andre and the Mamiraua Institute was catalyzed by Andre's visit to the Mamiraua Sustainable Development Reserve in 2013, where he was inspired by the reserve's beauty. The late Brazilian primatologist and conservationist Jose Marcio Ayres founded the reserve and the institute, and he was also a Rolex Awards Laureate like Andre. Their collaboration extends beyond academic research; it also aims to raise awareness about the crucial interplay between biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.
