In St. Paul, Minnesota, the Minnesota Frost has commenced its second season, showcasing a roster filled with talent primarily from the University of Minnesota's Gophers hockey team. Competing at a professional level, the team boasts five former Gophers among its ranks and is guided by Mira Jalosuo, who is now serving as an assistant coach. Jalosuo, originally from Finland, played for the Gophers from 2009 to 2013 and was part of the team that secured back-to-back NCAA championships in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, she represented Finland at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, earning a bronze medal in women’s ice hockey, marking a high point in her athletic career. Transitioning from her successful playing career, Jalosuo has embraced her role as a coach, expressing gratitude for her time at the University of Minnesota and the opportunities it provided. "I got extremely lucky with my college choice coming to Minnesota, the 'State of Hockey,'" she reflected. Throughout her coaching journey, she has worked with various age groups, from youth to collegiate levels, ultimately making her way to coaching a professional women’s hockey league. Her transition into coaching is rooted in her desire to continue sharing her passion for the sport. Jalosuo is noted for her infectious energy and credibility among players, stemming from her personal experience as a former athlete. Kelly Paneck, another former Gopher and assistant captain of the Frost, emphasized that Jalosuo's background as a player allows her to relate intimately with the team. With a strong foundation set in the Gophers women's hockey program, Jalosuo believes that there is a shared mentality among the players regarding expectations, particularly the pursuit of championships. "Nothing is good enough besides winning the Frozen Four or the national title," she stated, underscoring the competitive nature instilled in Gopher alumni. In addition to her professional obligations, Jalosuo is committed to raising her family in Minnesota, where she feels pride in her son growing up surrounded by female role models in sports. She hopes that in five years, when asked about his favorite player, he will proudly name a woman. Her aspirations extend beyond her family, as she wishes to serve as a positive influence for young players and contribute to the evolution of women’s sports within the community. Jalosuo's role as a coach is a testament to her dedication, not just to hockey, but to empowering the next generation of female athletes.
