In northern Minnesota, a woman named Annabell Whelan undertook a remarkable rescue of two injured owls earlier this week. On Monday, December 23, 2024, while out with her boyfriend's family in Duluth, Whelan spotted a snowy owl that had collided with a car and was stuck in the vehicle's grille. Earlier that day, she had already rescued a great gray owl found on the ground in Two Harbors. Whelan carefully handled both birds and ensured they received medical attention as they were taken to Wildwoods Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Duluth, and later to The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota for further treatment. Tragically, the snowy owl, referred to as Nowl, suffered severe internal injuries, a broken wing, and a broken leg. Despite Whelan's efforts and the promise of medical care from the experts, the injuries proved too severe for the owl, leading to its euthanasia as a humane decision to prevent further suffering. The great gray owl also had serious injuries, which included broken bones and large soft tissue wounds in its wing. As of now, it continues to receive intensive care at the Raptor Center, with veterinarians working diligently to save this majestic bird's life. Annabell Whelan, a 22-year-old Lake Superior Zoo guest experience manager, showcased immense compassion and dedication to wildlife welfare, which has resonated with the community. The incident has sparked conversations about the importance of being attentive to wildlife, especially around roads where collisions can occur. The public has been encouraged to slow down and report injured animals to proper rehabilitation centers for swift and safe rescue operations. Whelan's story emphasizes the critical role individuals can play in assisting wildlife and raises awareness about how everyday citizens can contribute to animal welfare. Her actions not only saved one bird but also highlight the collaborative efforts required in wildlife rehabilitation and the urgent need for public vigilance to protect vulnerable creatures in their natural habitat.
