Nissan Develops Cool Paint for Cars

TOKYO – In a timely announcement as Japan faces unprecedented heat, Nissan Motor Co. introduced a new “cool paint” designed to keep vehicle interiors cooler. The innovative coating, which is six times thicker than traditional paint, presents commercialization challenges but shows promise in reducing temperatures inside vehicles. Testing conducted at Tokyo’s Haneda airport, known for its unshaded areas, revealed that cars coated with this special paint maintained significantly lower temperatures. According to Nissan, the cool paint reduced the temperature of car roof panels by 12 degrees Celsius (22 degrees Fahrenheit) and the interior by 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit). This technology could potentially decrease reliance on air conditioning, thereby alleviating the strain on engines and electric vehicle batteries during extreme heat. The automotive industry has seen similar initiatives, with Toyota also exploring paint options that lower cabin temperatures through sun-reflective colors. Nissan's cool paint stands out by not only reflecting sunlight but also generating electromagnetic waves that redirect energy away from vehicles. Developed in collaboration with Radi-Cool, a Chinese company specializing in heat-reducing materials, the paint is part of a broader effort to create cooler-feeling products, including hats and sun parasols. Susumu Miura, a manager at Nissan's Research Center, emphasized that the electromagnetic waves emitted by the paint pose no health risks, stating, “My dream is to create cooler cars without consuming energy.”
