Pilots in Sweden Land Gripens on Rural Roads

In a strategic move to enhance military readiness, Sweden has developed an extensive network of roads that serve as military runways, a unique feature among NATO allies. This system allows for rapid relocation of aircraft, a tactic designed to outpace Soviet surveillance during the Cold War. Colonel Carl Bergqvist, chief of plans for the Swedish Air Force, emphasized the importance of this capability, stating that it was crucial for the survival of the nation against potential threats. The Swedish military's approach to air defense includes a well-structured training program for pilots, who learn to utilize these road-runways early in their careers. While the exact locations of these military sites remain undisclosed, Sweden has strategically positioned them across various regions, ensuring operational flexibility. With Sweden's recent accession to NATO, other member states now have access to this innovative military infrastructure. The NATO initiative, known as ACE, aims to replicate Sweden's road-runway concept across the alliance. Finland, which also has designated roads for landing, is transitioning to advanced aircraft like the F-35, enhancing its air capabilities. Meanwhile, the UK's Royal Air Force previously operated Jaguars capable of landing on highways, but the focus now is on designing systems that integrate such capabilities from the outset. Braw argues that visibility of military operations in civilian areas could foster a greater understanding among European citizens of the armed forces' role in society, reinforcing the connection between military readiness and national security.
