Bangladesh launches first private submarine cable with Pioneer Consulting

On September 10, 2024, Pioneer Consulting announced the commencement of construction for Bangladesh's first privately owned submarine telecommunications cable. This initiative aims to address the country's current limitations in submarine cable connectivity, which is primarily managed by state-owned entities. The Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission had previously awarded licenses to three companies, leading to the formation of the Bangladesh Private Cable System (BPCS) consortium, which is responsible for this project. The new submarine cable is expected to provide at least 45 Tbit/s of bandwidth, significantly enhancing the internet capacity in Bangladesh. This development is crucial as the nation currently relies on only two submarine cables, which are insufficient to meet the growing internet demand. The project is anticipated to not only improve service diversity and redundancy but also lower internet service prices for consumers. Pioneer Consulting has played a vital role in supporting the BPCS consortium over the past two years, assisting with various aspects such as route assessment and project management. The cable is projected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026, with the marine survey completed ahead of the monsoon season, ensuring timely progress. This project is a significant step towards providing world-class internet services in Bangladesh, aligning with the national demand for 34Tbps by 2026.
