Devon demands urgent AI skill development for future growth

In early April 2025, the Lifein AI exhibition took place in Devonport, Plymouth, showcasing advancements in artificial intelligence. This event gathered various stakeholders, including business leaders, educators, and members of the community, to discuss the importance of AI in shaping future industry and society. Key speaker Ronnie Carter, associated with the Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan, emphasized that AI is already redefining various industries and highlighted the necessity of equipping the workforce with relevant skills. He noted that while a significant majority of businesses acknowledge the need to implement AI solutions, only a small fraction considered themselves adequately prepared for these changes. Christina Wilkins, founder of Brand Biscuit Studio, addressed the critical role of collaboration among businesses and educational institutions in fostering innovation. She pointed out that through cooperative efforts, a deeper understanding of AI can be cultivated, thereby enhancing its potential to benefit communities in the southwest of England. The exhibition featured demonstrations of cutting-edge technologies, such as robotic applications and other AI innovations, allowing attendees to engage firsthand with the future capabilities AI can offer. Amidst these discussions, significant concern was raised regarding the preparedness of local businesses to adopt AI technologies. According to a study by Accenture referenced during the exhibition, 97% of businesses recognized the importance of integrating AI into their operations, yet only 15% felt equipped to do so. This gap illustrates a critical challenge facing the region as it seeks to harness the transformative power of AI effectively. Matt Fleming, co-organizer of the Lifein AI exhibit, further underscored the inevitability of AI's role in daily life and business operations. He asserted that AI would become increasingly sophisticated, urging immediate action to enable local businesses and individuals to adapt. The conversation initiated at this exhibition signifies a pivotal moment for Devon’s workforce and its collective future, advocating for systemic changes in skills development and training to remain competitive in an evolving landscape.
