GM EVs Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers in 2023

In a significant shift in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, General Motors (GM) has enabled its EV owners, including those with the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq, to access Tesla's Supercharger network. This development follows a trend initiated by Ford, which first secured access for its EVs in early 2022. As of September 2024, GM has updated the software in its vehicles to facilitate this access, with adapters available for purchase to connect to Tesla's charging ports. The transition to Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) marks a pivotal change in EV charging infrastructure, as many automakers, including Hyundai, Rivian, and Mercedes, have agreed to adopt this standard. Tesla's decision to share its charging connector design in November 2022 encouraged other manufacturers to align with its technology, which has become increasingly popular due to the growing number of NACS ports available compared to the Combined Charging Standard (CCS). As of now, there are approximately 36,499 NACS ports in the U.S., significantly outnumbering the 16,925 CCS ports. This disparity highlights the shift in preference among automakers and the potential challenges for EV owners still reliant on CCS. GM has worked with various suppliers to ensure a steady supply of NACS DC fast-charging adapters for its customers, with plans to integrate the NACS charge port into future EV models starting in 2025. The move to adopt Tesla's charging standard is expected to enhance the charging experience for GM EV owners, providing them with greater access to fast-charging options. This collaboration among automakers signifies a broader trend towards standardization in EV charging, ultimately benefiting consumers by expanding the charging infrastructure and improving convenience.
