Story

Reading Borough Council, in collaboration with the Reading Climate Action Network (ReadingCAN), has initiated a public survey to gather input on the borough's climate change policies. This effort comes as the current Reading Climate Emergency Strategy is set to conclude in 2025, with plans for a new strategy extending to 2030. The survey aims to outline the borough's pathway to achieving net-zero emissions, with responses to be reviewed in September by the drafting group. Heather Marshall, Co-chair of ReadingCAN, emphasized the importance of collaboration across various sectors to address systemic climate challenges. She stated, “This year is all about bringing people together... Collaboration and coordinated climate action is now crucial if we want to continue our excellent track record for emissions reduction in Reading.” The survey is part of a broader initiative to enhance public engagement in the climate strategy development process. In addition to the survey, the council has launched initiatives to involve community groups and young people in climate action discussions. The Designing a Net Zero Reading group is currently formulating initial priorities for the new strategy. John Ennis, the lead councillor for climate strategy and transport, urged all residents, workers, and students in Reading to participate in the engagement process to collectively address the climate emergency. The survey will remain open until September 5, after which the feedback will be presented to the Designing a Net Zero Reading group for consideration in the upcoming climate strategy.
