In October 2024, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) received a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a significant renewable energy transmission project in Gujarat. This initiative focuses on establishing a transmission system to facilitate the evacuation of power from a potential Renewable Energy Zone in the Khavda area, which is a part of Phase-V development aimed at supporting 8 GW of energy generation. The project, estimated to cost ₹24,819 Crore, will include the construction of 6000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC terminals at both KPS2 in Gujarat and Nagpur in Maharashtra. The extensive initiative encompasses a bipole HVDC line that extends around 1200 km, connecting the KPS2 terminal to Nagpur while traversing both Gujarat and Maharashtra. Furthermore, the project will involve the LILO of the Wardha-Raipur 765 kV D/C line at Nagpur, alongside the supply and installation of various associated equipment and interconnections at terminal stations. This venture marks the first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) project to be bid out through the Traditional Competitive Bidding process. This undertaking plays a crucial role in the overarching strategy to set up a total of 30 GW of energy evacuation capacity from the Khavda Renewable Energy park and is expected to significantly enhance power transfer capabilities toward essential load centers in the region. As of September 30, 2024, POWERGRID has already commissioned and operates numerous substations and extensive transmission lines, maintaining an impressive average system availability of approximately 99.8%.
