Renault drops EV prices to sidestep tax hikes
- Renault has lowered prices on its Scenic and Megane models to comply with new UK tax regulations.
- Significant upgrades have been implemented, including advanced driving features and charging technology.
- These changes aim to keep the vehicles below government tax thresholds and improve consumer appeal.
In response to recent changes in Vehicle Excise Duty affecting electric vehicles, Renault has made significant adjustments to its Scenic and Megane ranges in the UK. The government’s new Expensive Car Supplement imposes additional taxes on vehicles priced above £40,000, prompting Renault to lower prices on select models to keep them below this threshold. The Scenic Techno Long Range model saw a price reduction from £40,995 to £37,195, while the sporty Techno Esprit Alpine Long Range model now costs £39,930, avoiding the tax supplement despite potential additional costs for non-standard paint options. The Scenic is now exclusively available with a longer-range battery that boasts a maximum claimed range of 379 miles. The previous Comfort Range model has been discontinued. Furthermore, the Megane model starts at £32,495, marking a reduction of £1,500, and the top-spec model in Iconic Esprit Alpine trim is priced at £36,995, a decrease of £1,000. The new line-up features a simplified range but with enhanced technology. Upgrades across both model lines include features like full one-pedal driving, allowing smoother stops and reducing brake wear, and the addition of a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) adaptor. Renault’s standard Plug & Charge technology now facilitates seamless digital transactions at public charging stations, eliminating the need for apps or payment cards. For Esprit Alpine models, there is a new Face ID feature that personalizes the driving experience by recognizing drivers. Improvements have also been made to rear camera quality and rear LED lighting on the Megane. With the order books expected to open at the end of April, first deliveries are scheduled for the following month, making these refreshed models available to consumers sooner.
