Chicago Bulls Unveil Plans for Major Renovations Around United Center

The Chicago Bulls have revealed initial designs for the upcoming renovations surrounding the United Center, part of a significant initiative known as The 1901 Project Chicago. Announced via social media, the first phase of this transformative project is set to commence in spring 2025, with a total investment of $7 billion aimed at revitalizing the West Side of Chicago. The project is spearheaded by the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families and is designed to celebrate the city’s unique spirit while enhancing opportunities for local residents and businesses. United Center CEO Terry Savarise indicated that the project will unfold over at least a decade, with the majority of funding expected to come from private investments. However, certain elements, such as a new CTA Pink Line stop, will necessitate government funding. While an official proposal has yet to be submitted to local authorities, Ciere Boatright, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to reverse years of parking lot expansion and restore traditional neighborhood development patterns. The United Center, which opened in 1994, serves as the home for both the Chicago Bulls and the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. Savarise emphasized the vision for the area, stating, "It's going to be a new neighborhood with the United Center as its anchor," indicating a commitment to fostering community growth and connectivity in the surrounding area.
