Young Pianist Yunchan Lim to Perform at Proms

In a recent performance of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, 20-year-old pianist Lim garnered widespread acclaim, with his playing described as so moving it brought a conductor to tears. Following a concert in Lucerne, Switzerland, where he showcased Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto, Lim shared insights into his musical journey and influences. Notably, he requested the use of a vintage Decca logo for his recordings, paying tribute to the legendary pianists who have recorded for the label over the past century. Despite coming from a non-musical family, Lim's upbringing was steeped in music. His mother introduced him to the works of Chopin and Liszt, while his father nurtured a love for Korean traditional music. Lim reflects on the many pianists who have shaped his artistry, recalling his own early experiences with music, including a memorable recording of Chopin’s Waltz that he first heard at the age of nine. When not performing, Lim dedicates himself to rigorous practice, often spending up to 20 hours a day honing his craft, fueled by late-night snacks. While he may not indulge in K-pop, he finds joy in jazz, showcasing his diverse musical interests.
