Heathrow airport sounds inspire unique track by Jordan Rakei

In a groundbreaking initiative, London’s Heathrow Airport has engaged musician and producer Jordan Rakei to create an innovative track made entirely from sounds recorded within its terminals. Rakei, a Grammy-nominated artist, recorded over 50 distinct sounds ranging from passengers' footsteps to the sounds of aircraft engines, on-site. This project is significant not only for its artistic merit but also as a tribute to ambient music pioneer Brian Eno’s classic album, which introduced the concept of music specifically for airports. The finished track, designed to loop and evoke the excitement of travel, is currently being played throughout Heathrow’s four terminals. Heathrow Airport anticipates this summer to be one of the busiest in its history, projecting around 250,000 passengers daily, underscoring the importance of creating an engaging environment for travelers. The airport's director of services, Lee Boyle, expressed that this soundtrack encapsulates the emotions associated with the beginning of a holiday, aiming to enhance the overall travel experience. The integration of airport sounds into a musical composition is a novel approach, allowing travelers to connect with the unique atmosphere of the airport from a different perspective. Among the sounds sampled, Rakei incorporated elements like public announcements and baggage handling sounds to create a realistic sonic representation of the airport experience. In addition to the artistic sounds, Rakei included several pop culture references, notably by using the sound of footsteps from the movie 'Bend It Like Beckham' and beeping sounds from the security scanner featured in 'Love Actually.' This element adds a layer of nostalgia and familiarity for listeners, making the track even more engaging for frequent travelers. The unveiling of this unique auditory experience marks an important cultural moment for Heathrow Airport, showcasing its commitment to innovation in enhancing the passenger experience. The airport plans to continue integrating music into the traveler experience, having previously introduced live performances, which are set to return this July to accompany the growing number of travelers anticipated during the peak summer months.
