Indonesian President Joko Widodo Begins Transition to New Capital Nusantara Amid Challenges

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, has officially moved into the new Garuda Palace in Nusantara, the proposed capital of Indonesia, as he prepares for crucial meetings. This transition comes as the president aims to address concerns surrounding the ambitious $32 billion infrastructure project, which has faced significant delays and a lack of foreign investment. Jokowi acknowledged the enormity of the task, stating that the development could take "10, 15, 20 years," emphasizing that it is not a quick endeavor. Despite the challenges, including managerial and land issues, Jokowi reported that essential services such as water, electricity, and internet connectivity are now operational, allowing him to make the move. He admitted to a restless first night in the palace, which features a striking design symbolizing an eagle. The new capital is strategically located on the island of Borneo, approximately 1,200 kilometers from Jakarta, the current capital, which suffers from severe congestion and environmental issues. As Indonesia prepares for Independence Day celebrations in Nusantara on August 17, Jokowi has adopted a more pragmatic tone regarding the project. He reassured the public that the development is proceeding according to established procedures, countering perceptions of haste. However, skepticism remains, particularly after the resignation of key project officials and the absence of foreign funding commitments. Looking ahead, President-elect Prabowo Subianto has expressed intentions to continue the development of Nusantara post-inauguration, although analysts suggest he may prioritize his own initiatives, such as a "nutritious food" program, over the capital project.
