Islamist Preacher Anjem Choudary Sentenced to Life for Terrorism Role

Radical preacher Anjem Choudary has been sentenced to life in prison for directing the banned terrorist organization al-Muhajiroun (ALM). The 57-year-old was convicted of promoting the group, which has been outlawed in the UK since 2010 for its involvement in terrorism. Justice Mark Wall described Choudary as a central figure in the organization, stating he encouraged young men to engage in radical activities. Prosecutors highlighted his “warped mindset” and noted that he took over leadership of ALM after its founder was imprisoned in Lebanon. Choudary's conviction follows a lengthy history of legal troubles, including a previous conviction for supporting the Islamic State. Despite his claims that ALM no longer existed, evidence presented in court revealed his continued involvement, including online lectures to the Islamic Thinkers Society (ITS), a U.S. branch of ALM. The judge emphasized the danger Choudary poses, stating he could not foresee a time when he would cease to be a threat to society. The court also sentenced Khaled Hussein, a 29-year-old follower of Choudary, to six years for his membership in the proscribed organization. Both men were arrested after Hussein arrived at Heathrow Airport last year. The case has been described as historic, with law enforcement officials noting Choudary's significant influence on British jihadists and the ongoing risk he represents. Choudary will serve a minimum of 28 years, meaning he will not be eligible for release until he is 85. The judge condemned his entrenched extremist views, which he argued contribute to societal division and the normalization of violence for ideological purposes.
