Story

British Airways has announced the suspension of its flight route from London Heathrow to Beijing, effective October 26, 2024. The decision comes as the airline faces increasing competition from Chinese carriers, which can operate more direct and cost-effective flights over Russian airspace. While BA's Boeing 777 takes approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes to reach Beijing, Chinese airlines like Air China and China Southern can complete the journey in as little as nine hours, significantly reducing travel time. The fare disparity further complicates BA's position, with Chinese airlines offering return flights for around £1,000, including baggage, compared to British Airways' £1,590, which excludes luggage. This pricing strategy, combined with the shorter flight duration, has made Chinese airlines more appealing to travelers. In response to this competitive pressure, BA is reaching out to affected customers to provide rebooking options or full refunds. Despite the suspension of the Beijing route, British Airways will continue to operate daily flights to Shanghai and Hong Kong. The airline emphasizes that the suspension is temporary, with plans to reassess the situation by November 2025. Industry experts note that the lack of demand, particularly from Chinese tourists who have not returned in large numbers post-pandemic, has contributed to the decision. Frequent-flyer advocate Rhys Jones highlighted the sparse occupancy of BA's Club World cabin during his recent travels, underscoring the challenges the airline faces in this market.
