Kim Jong-un Blames Officials for Flood Crisis in North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has conducted an inspection of flood-affected regions along the border with China, expressing frustration over what he termed official negligence that has led to a "grave crisis" in the country. Recent heavy rains have resulted in significant flooding, with fields submerged and only rooftops of homes visible in some areas. The extent of the disaster remains unclear, as reports have not confirmed any fatalities from the flooding. In his remarks, Kim criticized government officials for failing to implement adequate flood prevention measures, despite prior warnings and the establishment of a National Emergency Response Committee. He emphasized that the lack of preparedness and the indolence of officials have exacerbated the situation, stating, "Indolence and expediency of officials at major jobs have reached a very serious phase." This criticism comes in the context of ongoing challenges faced by North Korea, including the impact of natural disasters, pandemic restrictions, and international sanctions. The recent flooding follows Typhoon Gaemi, which has caused devastation in the Philippines and Taiwan before making landfall in China. North Korea has been experiencing record rainfall, with Kaesong City recording 63mm (18.2 inches) in a single day, marking the highest rainfall in 29 years, according to South Korea’s weather agency. In response to the crisis, Kim held a meeting to discuss strategies aimed at mitigating the impact of the rains on agriculture and the population.
