An old ambulance station in Rye, Sussex, has been transformed into a modern home by interior architect Marta. Inspired by the town's rich history, she preserved elements like the proportions of the bedrooms and the original beams while introducing contemporary features. The design includes a large open-plan living area that echoes the communal spaces of medieval halls, centered around a double-sided woodburning stove. Marta incorporated raw materials and hospital references, such as a surgical trolley and a vintage cadaver table, to honor the building's past. The home boasts generous views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the connection between the interior and the historical context outside. This renovation not only revitalizes the structure but also creates a harmonious blend of old and new, making it a unique living space for the family.
