PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Philadelphia Police Department has welcomed 24 new cadets who were sworn in during a graduation ceremony at Temple University. This event marks a significant step in their journey to becoming full-fledged officers, as they received diplomas and took an oath to protect and serve the community. The addition of these new officers comes at a crucial time for the department, which is currently facing a staffing shortage. Despite the challenges, the police department reports a notable decrease in crime rates, particularly in homicides. So far this year, there have been 173 homicides, reflecting a 38% drop compared to 280 at the same time last year. This positive trend is encouraging for the new recruits, who are eager to contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance public safety. Sebastian Santos, one of the new officers, shared his unique journey to the force, crediting a chance encounter with retired officer Eric McLaurin at a Popeyes restaurant two years ago. McLaurin's mentorship played a pivotal role in guiding Santos toward a career in law enforcement. Meanwhile, class valedictorian Marcus Perry expressed his pride in serving the community that raised him, emphasizing that becoming a police officer has been a lifelong dream. The new officers are expected to begin their duties on the streets within the next few days, ready to make a positive impact in Philadelphia.
