Man arrested for freeway shootings on I-880 and I-680 in East Bay

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced the arrest of 47-year-old Damien Lamont Harris in connection with two freeway shootings that occurred on August 3 in the East Bay area. The first incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on southbound I-680 near Stoneridge Drive in Pleasanton, where a driver was shot in the shoulder during heavy traffic. Approximately 45 minutes later, a second shooting occurred on the Industrial Parkway on-ramp to northbound I-880 in Hayward, although the victim in this case was unharmed. Investigators noted similarities in the suspect vehicle descriptions from both incidents. Utilizing advanced investigative tools, including license plate readers and Flock Safety cameras, detectives were able to identify Harris as the primary suspect. This technological assistance played a crucial role in linking the two shootings and ultimately led to his apprehension. On August 29, law enforcement agencies, including the Fairfield Police and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, executed search warrants at residences in Fairfield and Fremont. Harris was located at a home in Fairfield and taken into custody without resistance. During the search, authorities discovered firearms, ammunition, and suspected narcotics, which contributed to the charges against him. Harris was booked into the Solano County Jail on an outstanding warrant, along with additional charges stemming from the search. The CHP emphasized their commitment to addressing violence on freeways, highlighting the importance of community safety and the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts.
