The Independent and Refuge launch campaign to support domestic abuse victims

Domestic abuse remains a pervasive issue, often occurring in private settings, making it difficult for victims to seek help. Many victims, primarily women, face financial control and psychological intimidation, which limits their options for escape. The tragic murder of Sarah Everard has highlighted the urgent need for better protection for women. In response, The Independent and Refuge have launched a campaign to raise £300,000 to build a new type of refuge home for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The proposed home aims to provide a secure environment for families for up to six months, allowing them to rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse. The initiative seeks to address the chronic shortage of refuge spaces, as many survivors are turned away due to lack of availability. Last year, nearly 17,000 women found themselves without shelter, with some tragically resorting to suicide. The campaign encourages public donations, with each £15 contributing to the overall goal. The partnership with Persimmon, a major house builder, aims to create a prototype that can serve as a model for future accommodations for those in distress.
