Abramovich's £2.5bn Chelsea Sale Funds Still Awaiting Ukraine Aid

The cash, amounting to over £2 billion, is currently held in a frozen bank account in the UK as part of sanctions against oligarchs from Russia, including Roman Abramovich, the former owner of the club. The Labour government, consistent with the Conservative stance, insists the funds must be used solely for humanitarian aid within Ukraine, particularly for those affected by the ongoing war. However, Abramovich is reportedly seeking to expand the benefits of this money to projects outside Ukraine, complicating the negotiations. This reluctance may be linked to his prior associations with the Russian government, particularly Vladimir Putin, and could create political difficulties in reconciling UK demands with his wishes. As a result, more than two years after the sale, no actual distribution of the funds has taken place, prompting concerns about the rising humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the intentions behind the stalled release of this money.
