Lucy Harman, a Southampton resident, is raising awareness about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) after her own struggle nearly cost her life. At just 18 years old, shortly after starting university, Harman experienced debilitating symptoms, including frequent bathroom visits exceeding 50 times a day, constant pain, and hair loss. Despite her severe condition, she kept her symptoms hidden due to embarrassment and a belief that she could attribute them to other causes. Reflecting on her experience, Harman emphasized the importance of seeking medical help for health issues, regardless of their nature. "You'd go to the doctors if you've got a broken arm, so why wouldn't you go if you've got a problem with your poo?" she questioned. Her reluctance to discuss her symptoms with family or friends stemmed from the stigma surrounding bowel health, particularly for young adults. After being hospitalized and diagnosed, Harman realized the urgency of addressing her health concerns. "Finding out what was wrong with me gave me the ability to get help," she stated. Now, she actively shares her journey on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where she has garnered over 6,600 followers. For Harman, this outreach serves as a coping mechanism, allowing her to express her emotions and connect with others facing similar challenges. Through her advocacy, Harman hopes to inspire others to prioritize their health and break the taboo surrounding discussions about bowel issues.
