Destruction of ancient geoglyphs by offroad drivers in Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert Foundation has raised alarms over the destruction of ancient geoglyphs located in Alto Barranco, Chile, caused by offroad vehicles, including motorcycles and 4x4s. These geoglyphs, created by pre-Hispanic peoples between 1000 and 1540 AD, feature large geometric and zoomorphic figures that served as navigational aids. The foundation's social media post emphasized the importance of preserving these historical markers, urging individuals to refrain from damaging them. Experts highlight that the geoglyphs, some nearly 100 feet tall, are difficult to miss, suggesting that the destruction is intentional or reckless. The archaeological site has remained intact due to the Atacama Desert's unique semi-arid climate, which limits rainfall and erosion. However, the increasing activity of offroad drivers poses a significant threat to these ancient structures. Luis Pérez, an archaeologist and director of the Regional Museum of Iquique, expressed his concern over the irreversible damage being inflicted on these national monuments. He noted that the situation is dire, as the ongoing destruction may lead to the permanent loss of these cultural artifacts. Since 2021, the issue has been reported to the Prosecutor’s Office, emphasizing that damage to such monuments is a serious crime. Despite the severity of the situation, the First Environmental Court has not yet received any formal complaints regarding the destruction of the Alto Barranco geoglyphs. The Ministry of National Assets recognizes these geoglyphs as Archaeological Monuments, underscoring their significance and the need for their protection against further harm.
