Ricky Jones, a suspended Labour councillor from Dartford, has been charged with encouraging violent disorder following remarks made during a counter-protest in Walthamstow, London. The 57-year-old was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday after videos surfaced online showing him allegedly inciting violence against far-right demonstrators by suggesting they should have their throats cut. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that Jones was charged on Friday, just two days after the incident on August 7. Jaswant Narwal, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, stated that the evidence included video footage of Jones addressing a crowd and making gestures that appeared to encourage violent actions against the protestors. Jones is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday afternoon, where he will face the charge. The CPS emphasized the importance of a fair trial, urging the public to refrain from any reporting or commentary that could potentially prejudice the ongoing legal proceedings. Since 2019, Jones has served as a councillor in Dartford, Kent, but has been suspended from his position within the Labour Party following these serious allegations. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the tensions surrounding political protests and the responsibilities of public officials in such contexts.
