Story

Several livestock producers in Colorado have formally requested the lethal removal of wolves from the state, citing ongoing predation on their cattle. In letters addressed to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and Governor Jared Polis, ranchers argue that non-lethal deterrents have proven ineffective in preventing wolf attacks, which they claim threaten their livelihoods. The correspondence specifically referenced a situation where CPW declined to remove two wolves responsible for significant livestock losses. The ranchers expressed frustration over CPW's management of wolves, stating that the agency's inaction has allowed a pack of predatory wolves to thrive, further endangering livestock. They emphasized that the training of wolf pups to hunt livestock poses a long-term threat to ranching operations. Non-lethal methods, such as physical barriers and livestock management adjustments, have been suggested, but ranchers feel these measures are insufficient to address the problem. In response, Governor Polis's office reiterated the administration's commitment to the Wolf Restoration and Management Plan, which was approved by CPW commissioners. Press Secretary Shelby Wieman noted that CPW and the Colorado Department of Agriculture are actively collaborating with ranchers to provide support and explore alternatives to mitigate livestock depredation. The Colorado Wolf Management Plan does allow for lethal control as a last resort, permitting the immediate killing of wolves attacking livestock. CPW Director Jeff Davis has acknowledged the concerns raised by ranchers, and further comments from CPW, the governor's office, and the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association are anticipated as the situation develops.
