Saudi Arabia hosted the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification from December 2 to 13, 2024, where various stakeholders gathered to discuss key environmental issues, including desertification. At this significant event, LONGi, a leading solar technology company, participated by presenting their achievements in the field of sustainable development and desertification control. During a side event organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, LONGi's Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, Zhang Haimeng, delivered a pivotal speech via video that outlined how the company has harnessed green technology to combat desertification effectively. He shared that desertification currently affects 45% of the global land surface, thereby impacting approximately 3.2 billion people worldwide. Zhang emphasized the potential benefits of utilizing desert areas for photovoltaic power generation, arguing that even using just 1% of these regions could meet the entire electricity needs of humanity. He highlighted successful implementations in the Kubuqi Desert, where LONGi constructed two photovoltaic power stations. These projects exemplified innovative ecological development models combining electricity generation with plant cultivation and breeding, actively addressing local challenges related to desertification while promoting environmental sustainability. The significance of this approach not only lies in renewable energy generation but also in improving microclimates. As photovoltaic modules provide shade and reduce water evaporation, they create conducive conditions for vegetation growth while also promoting the survival of plants in arid environments. This multifaceted synergy serves not only to stabilize solar energy production but also to alleviate the impact of natural disasters such as drought and sandstorms in affected areas. Furthermore, the company's commitment to sustainable practices aligns with global calls for attention to desertification prevention, urging policymakers and the public to adopt similar environmental protections. Zhang Haimeng concluded his address by advocating for collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing global desertification control initiatives, reinforcing LONGi's mission to harness solar energy for a sustainable future.
