In March 2025, Amazon officially launched its Irish website, Amazon.ie, aimed at providing a tailored online shopping experience for consumers in Ireland. This platform allows local customers to transact in Euro and sign up for an Irish Prime membership, facilitating easier access to a wide range of products. The introduction of the 'Brands of Ireland' initiative, which features local brands such as Barry's Tea and Ella & Jo, is part of Amazon's collaboration with Enterprise Ireland to support local businesses and enhance consumer choice. Additionally, customers coming from a UK Prime membership can conveniently switch to the Irish version or take advantage of a 30-day free trial of the service. The launch marks a significant investment commitment by Amazon, which since 2004 has invested over €22 billion in its operations in Ireland. The company has expanded its presence by opening six sites across the country, employing around 6,500 people in various roles, including data engineering, operations management, and finance. Opened to great excitement from local Amazon leaders and politicians, this new platform aligns with the company's broader strategy to build a stronger relationship with Irish consumers and empower small to medium enterprises. Alison Dunn, who took on the role of Ireland country manager in December 2022, expressed pride in the launch, noting how it was a culmination of efforts that began with the establishment of Amazon's Dublin fulfilment center. Moreover, the news has been welcomed by government officials like Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who emphasized the potential benefits of increased choice and value for consumers, along with opportunities to support various businesses from small to large scale. Peter Burke, the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism, and Employment, also highlighted how Amazon's commitment to this new platform would provide additional avenues for Irish companies to access global markets while strengthening domestic job creation. Earlier developments included Amazon's proposal for a transatlantic subsea telecommunications cable that connects Castlefreke, County Cork, to a location on the US east coast, indicating ongoing expansion plans in the region. The introduction of Amazon.ie clearly represents a significant milestone in enhancing e-commerce capabilities for Irish customers and businesses alike.
