- Food Safety inspectors seized 1,600 kilograms of adulterated mawa from a bus in Bhopal on October 28, 2024.
- The seizure was part of increased inspections during Diwali, aimed at preventing the sale of substandard food products.
- Authorities are conducting investigations to trace the owner and address the broader issue of food safety in the region.
In Madhya Pradesh, a recent routine inspection by the Food Safety Department at the Inter-State Bus Terminal in Bhopal led to the seizure of 1,600 kilograms of adulterated mawa from a bus originating from Gwalior. The authorities were conducting checks particularly due to an anticipated increase in smuggling of substandard food ingredients during the Diwali season. Upon opening the bus trunk, officers discovered around 40 baskets of mawa, sparking concerns regarding its quality. Subsequently, samples were sent for testing at a government laboratory in Bhopal, and a case was registered against the unknown owner of the consignment. In the ongoing campaign against food adulteration, over 2,000 kilograms of low-quality mawa have been confiscated across the state so far. Earlier in the week, authorities also seized a truckload of mawa from Morena and additional quantities from a prominent sweet shop in Indore, indicating a widespread issue with food safety in the region. The sweet shop's mawa was reported to have been made using refined oil and powdered milk, raising alarms about its content and health risks associated with consumption. The Food Safety Department's proactive measures aim to prevent the sale of unhealthy food products during festive seasons, when such malpractices often spike. Investigations are currently underway to trace the suppliers and ensure public safety against potentially hazardous ingredients.
