Story

In Surguja district, Chhattisgarh, a mason named Sandeep Lakra went missing three months ago, leading to a police investigation initiated after a missing persons report was filed. The case began when contractor Abhishek Pandey accused Sandeep of stealing construction materials from a high school building site. Following Sandeep's disappearance, his mobile phone was traced to various locations, complicating the investigation and raising concerns among his family and community members. As pressure mounted from the Sarva Adivasi Samaj and local leaders, police intensified their efforts, leading to the detention of contractor Pratyush Pandey and three associates. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to having killed Sandeep in a fit of rage over the alleged theft. They disclosed that they had buried his body beneath the foundation of a water tank in Lurena, approximately 50 kilometers from the site of the initial incident. On the day of the excavation, police used a JCB to demolish the water tank and recover Sandeep's body, which was found about 15 feet underground. Family members and community representatives were present during the grim discovery, which confirmed their worst fears. The identification was made through Sandeep's clothing, further deepening the tragedy for his family. In response to the sensitive nature of the case, a heavy police presence was deployed in the Sitapur area to maintain order. As the investigation continues, five suspects remain in custody, while two, including the main contractor, are still at large, highlighting the ongoing challenges in resolving this disturbing case.
