Story

MilliporeSigma, the U.S. and Canada Life Science division of Merck KGaA, has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for its significant contributions to renewable energy. The company is actively working towards achieving climate neutrality across its entire value chain by 2040, which includes addressing Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. Recent initiatives include the installation of solar panels and the establishment of virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) in Europe, which will fulfill 100% of its electricity needs by 2026. Since 2009, MilliporeSigma has installed 2.28 MW of on-site solar power across various global locations, including the U.S., India, Germany, and France. In 2023, the company signed long-term agreements in China to source 80% of its manufacturing sites' electricity from renewable sources. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainability and reduce environmental impact. The company is also investing approximately $100 million in sustainability improvements through its EDISON program, which focuses on energy and water efficiency. In 2023 alone, EDISON completed over 60 projects that resulted in significant energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions, alongside substantial water conservation efforts. Looking forward, MilliporeSigma is set to install additional solar photovoltaic systems in the U.S., with one project in California expected to cover all of its site’s electric consumption. The recognition from the EPA underscores the company's commitment to advancing the green power market and its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable operations.
