US nuclear firm to establish reactor factory in South Yorkshire

Holtec, a leading US nuclear firm, has announced plans to establish a factory in South Yorkshire dedicated to manufacturing small modular reactors (SMRs). This facility represents a significant £1.5 billion investment and is expected to create approximately 3,000 engineering jobs over the next two decades. The decision to locate the factory in South Yorkshire was influenced by the region's growing reputation as a hub for clean energy technologies, including nuclear and hydrogen sectors. The site was selected from a competitive pool of 13 potential locations across the UK, highlighting South Yorkshire's strategic importance in the emerging clean energy landscape. Mayor Oliver Coppard emphasized the region's commitment to a clean energy transformation, which is further supported by Holtec's investment in local skills and training through a dedicated SMR Learning Academy. Holtec has a long-standing presence in the UK, having worked at Sizewell B nuclear power station for over 15 years. The company aims to ensure that at least 70% of the materials and components used in the factory are sourced locally, thereby bolstering the UK supply chain. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of enhancing energy security and fostering economic growth in the region. The establishment of this factory follows a similar move by Rolls-Royce SMR, which also chose South Yorkshire for its multimillion-pound facility earlier this year. Together, these developments position South Yorkshire as a key player in the UK's clean energy sector, promising high-quality job creation and sustainable growth for the local economy.
