Story

ROME — Italian prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the tragic capsizing of a superyacht off the coast of Sicily, which resulted in the deaths of seven individuals. Termini Imerese prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed that while no suspects have been identified at this stage, the inquiry is in its early phases and could evolve as new information emerges. Investigators are particularly focused on understanding how the yacht, branded as “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Perini Navi, could sink while a nearby sailboat remained intact. The luxury yacht, named The Bayesian, sank during a storm early Monday, prompting a four-day search for the victims. Among the deceased is 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges. Lynch's body was recovered alongside those of other victims, while his wife, Angela Bacares, survived the incident. Civil protection officials suspect that a waterspout may have struck the yacht, leading to its rapid descent into the Mediterranean. Prosecutors are contemplating charges of “multiple manslaughter” and “culpable shipwreck” in light of the incident. At a press conference, officials revealed that five of the victims were found in a cabin, desperately seeking air as the yacht sank. Chief prosecutor Cartosio described the event as a “grave tragedy” and emphasized the seriousness of the situation if it was caused by human error. The investigation will seek to determine whether the crew adequately warned passengers of the impending storm.
