Story

Austrian authorities have thwarted a potential attack on Taylor Swift's upcoming concerts in Vienna, revealing that both suspects were reportedly inspired by extremist groups, including the Islamic State and al-Qaida. Investigators discovered bomb-making materials at the home of one suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian of North Macedonian descent, who had been planning the attack since July. The second suspect, a 17-year-old, was also found to possess extremist materials. The planned attacks were aimed at a crowd expected to reach 65,000 inside the stadium and 30,000 outside. In response to the threat, concert organizer Barracuda Music announced the cancellation of the three scheduled shows for safety reasons. London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed understanding for Vienna's decision but affirmed that London would proceed with its planned concerts, citing lessons learned from past tragedies, including the 2017 Manchester bombing that killed 22 people. Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria's Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, noted that the main suspect had been radicalized and believed in the justification of violence against "infidels." Austria's intelligence services collaborated with foreign agencies to apprehend the suspects, and while no additional suspects are being sought, a 15-year-old in contact with them has been interrogated. Taylor Swift has previously expressed concerns about large-scale violence at her concerts, particularly following incidents like the Manchester attack and the Las Vegas shooting in 2017. She described her fears about ensuring the safety of millions of fans during her tours.
