ELMONT, NY - A long life prayer service, or puja, was held Thursday morning at the UBS Arena on Long Island, organized by the Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey in honor of the Dalai Lama. The 89-year-old spiritual leader is currently in New York recuperating from knee replacement surgery performed in June. Dr. David Mayman from the Hospital for Special Surgery provided an update on the Dalai Lama's recovery, stating that he is making significant progress. "His Holiness is recovering well," Dr. Mayman noted, emphasizing the importance of ongoing physical therapy over the next six to twelve months to optimize his recovery. The doctor expressed optimism about the Dalai Lama's health, indicating that improvements are expected to continue for a full year post-surgery. In anticipation of the large turnout for the prayer service, the Long Island Rail Road implemented additional train services during the Thursday morning rush hour. A total of 21 trains were scheduled to make extra stops at Woodside and Elmont-UBS Arena, facilitating access for attendees traveling to the event. The puja not only reflects the community's support for the Dalai Lama but also highlights the significance of his teachings and presence, especially during his recovery period. The event served as a reminder of the enduring connection between the Tibetan community and their spiritual leader.
