Philippines protests against China's coast guard presence near Scarborough shoal

In the South China Sea, tensions have heightened significantly due to Chinese coast guard vessels' presence around the Scarborough Shoal. Reports indicate that on January 5 and January 10, the Philippines detected two Chinese vessels in its exclusive economic zone, prompting a formal protest from Manila. Philippine officials, including Jonathan Malaya from the National Security Council, described China's aggressive maneuvers as 'pushing us to the wall,' indicating a serious threat to the country's sovereign rights in these disputed waters. The incident has triggered communication between government officials and military personnel as they discuss the next steps in dealing with the ongoing tensions. The Philippine Coast Guard engaged in several attempts to demand the withdrawal of the substantial Chinese coast guard vessel, which was reportedly within a mere 77 nautical miles from the Philippine coastline. Commodore Jay Tarriela emphasized the significance of these actions, stating that they are necessary to signify to the international community that the Philippines will not accept any form of illegal presence within its territorial claims. The rising friction stems from China's historical claim over the Scarborough Shoal, which it has backed with the deployment of coast guard and navy ships. The Philippines previously secured a favorable ruling from an international arbitration tribunal in 2016, declaring that China's expansive claims lack legal basis under international law.
