Gas prices surge to new high in Michigan for 2025
- Gas prices in Michigan reached $3.39 per gallon recently due to refinery disruptions.
- Current average prices are around $3.30, marking a modest increase from last week.
- As operations resume, prices may stabilize or decrease for Michigan motorists.
In Michigan, gas prices have recently escalated to $3.39 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, marking a new high for the year 2025. This increase occurred around August 27, 2025, shortly before the Labor Day weekend. According to AAA-The Auto Club Group, this spike in prices can be attributed to operational disruptions at a refinery located in Whiting, Indiana, which caused a ripple effect in gas pricing across the region. As the key refinery starts to resume normal operations, it is anticipated that prices may stabilize or even decrease. Despite the recent high, current gas prices in the state average around $3.30 per gallon, which is just slightly up by 1 cent from the previous week. This figure is significantly higher than the average price marked a month ago, which was 15 cents lower. In comparison to the same period last year, prices have decreased by 7 cents. Notably, these fluctuations reflect the significant impact of refinery functionality on fuel prices. Metro Detroit's current average stands at $3.30 per gallon, which is approximately 1 cent lower than last week's figure and 11 cents below last year's average. Regional variations in gas prices are evident, with certain areas experiencing more expensive rates. For instance, Ann Arbor shows higher averages at $3.37, while other cities like Benton Harbor and Lansing follow closely behind at $3.34 and $3.32, respectively. Conversely, some locations in Michigan enjoy lower prices, with the least expensive average found in Marquette at $3.13 and others like Traverse City and Flint at $3.16 and $3.22, respectively. As refinery issues begin to resolve, the hope is that Michigan drivers will soon find relief at the gas pump, leading to potentially lower prices in the upcoming weeks.
