Story

— North Dakota mourns the loss of Republican state Rep. Randy Schobinger, who passed away at the age of 54 after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Schobinger, who was once the youngest state senator in North Dakota's history when elected at 24, died on Tuesday in Delano, Tennessee. His journey in politics began with a unique campaign strategy, using a 1972 Toyota he purchased for $100, emblazoned with “Vote Schobinger.” Schobinger served as a state senator from 1994 to 2006 and made attempts to secure the state treasurer position in 1996 and 2000, though he was unsuccessful. His record as the youngest senator was surpassed in 2004 by Nick Hacker, who won a seat at just 22 years old. In 2016, Schobinger transitioned to the state House, where he was an active member of the budget-writing Appropriations Committee. He chose not to seek reelection for a third term this year. In light of his passing, district Republicans will appoint a successor to complete his term until November, as confirmed by district GOP chairman Jay Lundeen. Lundeen praised Schobinger for his dedication and hard work in serving the community. Republican House Majority Leader Mike Lefor also remembered him as a good man and a formidable debater. The North Dakota Legislature is scheduled to reconvene in January 2025, marking a significant transition in the state's political landscape.
