BTS Suga Apologizes for E-Scooter Incident

Suga, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS, is under investigation following a serious incident involving an e-scooter in Seoul. Reports indicate that the 31-year-old artist was found lying on the ground in the Yongsan district on August 6 after falling from the vehicle. A subsequent breathalyser test revealed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.227%, significantly exceeding South Korea's legal limit of 0.08%. Under local traffic laws, such a high level could result in a fine ranging from 10 million to 20 million won (approximately £5,710 to £11,420) or a prison sentence of two to five years. Initially, Suga's management, BigHit Entertainment, stated he was riding an electric kickboard, but it was later clarified that he was on a more powerful e-scooter capable of reaching speeds up to 30 km/h. Following the incident, Suga issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that he had been fined and lost his driving license. However, he claimed to have consumed only one glass of beer prior to the accident, a statement that has raised eyebrows given the high blood-alcohol level recorded. The incident has sparked controversy among fans, with some expressing support for Suga by posting images of alcohol in their vehicles, drawing criticism from the public. As the police investigation continues, culture critic Jung Min-jae noted that while Suga is unlikely to leave BTS, the group may face challenges in regaining public trust. The band is expected to reunite next year after all members complete their mandatory national service.
