Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jonathan Sykes noted that nasolabial folds are among the most frequent complaints he encounters during consultations. The rise in interest is largely attributed to social media pressures and unrealistic beauty ideals, prompting many, including 27-year-old Sabrina Patriarca, to seek cosmetic procedures. Patriarca, a Miami real estate agent, spent $800 on filler injections for her nasolabial folds, driven by her insecurities about aging and facial heaviness. Despite having undergone multiple cosmetic enhancements, she ultimately regretted the filler treatment, leading her to undergo a painful procedure to dissolve it. Sykes emphasized that while many patients believe nasolabial folds contribute to their aging appearance, the surrounding facial features often play a more significant role in the aging process. The demand for treatments targeting nasolabial folds has been overwhelming, yet Sykes cautioned that results can be disappointing, especially for individuals with deep-set folds that have been present since adolescence. In contrast, photo-editing has emerged as a popular, risk-free alternative for those seeking to eliminate the appearance of these lines. Celebrities like Bella Hadid and Ariana Grande have faced scrutiny for digitally smoothing out their smile lines, showcasing the disparity between real-life appearances and curated online images. Patriarca noted the irony in the term "smile lines," as they are often a result of happiness, yet are perceived negatively in the context of beauty standards.
