Brussels meeting: dialogue with Bulgaria for EU membership

In Brussels, the Minister for European Affairs, Orhan Murtazani, expressed the government's readiness for a meaningful dialogue with Bulgaria aimed at resolving issues hindering North Macedonia's EU membership. This statement followed a meeting with European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, where Murtazani highlighted the government's commitment to European integration as a top priority. The Commissioner acknowledged the swift progress made in implementing the reform agenda, which Murtazani regarded as a significant achievement in the government's early days. The discussions also addressed the challenges faced by North Macedonia, including necessary constitutional changes. Murtazani emphasized the importance of the EU's support in navigating the ongoing disputes with Bulgaria. He reiterated the government's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue to protect the interests of both nations while working towards EU membership. Additionally, the meeting covered the Western Balkans Growth Plan, which aims to bolster economic capacities and facilitate targeted reforms in the region. Murtazani noted that this plan includes a financial framework of 750 million euros for North Macedonia, comprising 250 million euros in grants and 500 million euros in favorable loans. This funding is intended to support specific projects and the broader reform agenda necessary for EU accession. Overall, the meeting underscored the commitment of both the North Macedonian government and the EU to work collaboratively towards overcoming obstacles to membership, highlighting the significance of dialogue and reform in achieving this goal.
