Story

Asahi Kasei, a Japanese technology company, has introduced a new grade of LASTAN™ flame-retardant nonwoven fabric aimed at enhancing the safety of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This innovative material can be utilized in various applications within EV battery packs, including top covers and busbar protection sleeves. The introduction comes at a time when battery safety is a significant concern for consumers, prompting global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to seek improved safety solutions. The market for materials that prevent thermal runaway in EV batteries is projected to grow by approximately 15% annually starting in 2024, indicating a rising demand for effective fire protection materials. LASTAN™ is designed to meet this demand with its exceptional flame resistance and electrical insulation properties, which are further enhanced by a special coating process that improves abrasion resistance. LASTAN™ can withstand flames of up to 1,300°C while maintaining a temperature below 400°C on the opposite side. It boasts a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 50 or higher, significantly exceeding the standard for flame retardance. In UL94 testing, it achieved the highest rating of 5VA, demonstrating its effectiveness in preventing damage from extreme heat. Asahi Kasei currently produces LASTAN™ in Japan and is exploring the possibility of expanding production to the United States and other countries. This strategic move aligns with the company's commitment to enhancing safety in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market, ultimately contributing to safer driving experiences for consumers worldwide.
