Story

Two Ohio brothers, Joseph and Joshua Lopez, have been sentenced to one month in prison in the United Arab Emirates for violating strict alcohol consumption laws. The brothers, who were on a tourist visit in June, claim they were drugged during a yacht party. The incident occurred on June 2 when they were invited to an afterparty, where they allege they were served a drink that was tampered with. Detained in Dubai, an organization that assists individuals facing legal challenges in the UAE, reported that the brothers were targeted by scammers. According to Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, the brothers were approached by a local resident who invited them to the yacht party. After consuming one drink, they lost consciousness and later found themselves in the custody of plain-clothed police officers. Although they were able to post bail, they were subsequently issued a travel ban, preventing their return to the United States. Stirling criticized the UAE's portrayal of Dubai as a safe tourist destination, highlighting that tourists are frequently targeted by criminals. She pointed to the broader issue of safety for visitors, referencing other incidents of crime against tourists, including a high-profile case of abduction and assault. Stirling warned that without diplomatic intervention, the Lopez brothers could face extended imprisonment in a country known for its human rights abuses. Joseph Lopez, an Air Force veteran and mental health advocate, has been particularly vocal about the challenges faced by tourists in the UAE, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and protection for visitors.
