Story

CHICO – Evacuations related to the Park Fire in Butte County have been lifted as firefighters focus their efforts on combating the blaze in eastern Tehama County. The Park Fire, which has burned 428,808 acres, is currently the largest wildfire in California for 2024 and ranks as the fourth-largest in the state's history. Despite the progress, containment remains at 34%, with firefighters facing challenges from hot and dry weather conditions. Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the fire, who allegedly was seen pushing a burning vehicle into a gully near Alligator Hole in upper Bidwell Park. As the fire spreads, it has reached areas near Highway 32 and Lassen Park Road, threatening the entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. This area was previously affected by the Dixie Fire three years ago, and officials are closely monitoring the situation as the Park Fire approaches the western section of the park. In response to the evolving situation, evacuation orders in Tehama County have been largely lifted or downgraded to warnings. Shasta County has also seen a reduction in evacuation orders, with only a few zones remaining under warning. Plumas County has lifted all evacuation orders, although some warnings are still in effect. Statewide, wildfire activity has surged in 2024, prompting officials to remain vigilant as they continue to battle multiple blazes across California.
