- The initiative underscores the UK-Oman relationship and promotes sustainable exploration and storytelling.
In November 2024, Prince William visited the Royal Geographic Society in London, where he announced a new expedition scheduled for the following year in Oman. This expedition, named the Jewel of Arabia Expedition, seeks to trace the steps of British explorer Bertram Thomas, who journeyed through Oman in 1928. The trip will involve a crew of six members traversing Oman’s challenging terrain for thirty days using various modes of transport, including foot, camel, and 4x4 vehicles. It aims to highlight Oman’s rich natural heritage and promote the friendly relations between the UK and Oman, underlined by the recent visit of His Majesty the Sultan of Oman to the UK. The expedition emphasizes slow travel and storytelling, and also incorporates modern technology for real-time sharing of experiences, aiming to change perceptions of the Middle East. Prince William and Theyazin bin Haitham, the heir to the Omani throne, were present for the announcement and expressed interest in engaging young people in environmental issues and sustainable tourism during their journey.
