Story

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, an elderly woman fell victim to a sophisticated scam that resulted in her losing Rs 46 lakh. The incident began on September 11, when she received a call from someone claiming to be an officer from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller falsely informed her that a SIM card had been registered in her name and that her number was involved in illegal activities, including harassment. This alarming news led her to panic and comply with the demands of the conmen. Subsequent calls from individuals posing as customs and CBI officials escalated the situation. They claimed that her Aadhar Card details were linked to a parcel sent to Cambodia, which was being investigated. The scammers further threatened her with serious allegations involving drugs and money laundering, insisting that she transfer her funds to avoid legal repercussions. Under immense pressure, the woman transferred Rs 40 lakh on September 13, followed by an additional Rs 6 lakh the next day. Realizing she had been deceived, the woman reported the incident to the National Crime Reporting Portal. The crime branch has since registered a case and is actively investigating the matter. This incident highlights the growing trend of digital scams targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, who may be less familiar with such fraudulent tactics. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls or messages to prevent further victimization. The case underscores the need for increased awareness and education regarding digital fraud.
