Story

BALTIMORE—Nicholas Bendy, a 44-year-old Assistant Sheriff and Legal Advisor for the Baltimore Sheriff’s Office, was arrested for driving under the influence in Ocean City on Thursday morning. Police reports indicate that an officer observed Bendy's black Ford Explorer speeding and weaving between lanes on the southbound Coastal Highway, prompting a traffic stop at Trimper Avenue. During the stop, the officer detected a strong smell of alcohol on Bendy's breath, noted his slurred speech, and observed bloodshot, glassy eyes. Field sobriety tests revealed Bendy's poor balance and difficulty following instructions. He admitted to consuming four beers prior to driving, leading to his arrest. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a can of beer. As of now, the Baltimore Sheriff’s Office has not issued a statement regarding Bendy's employment status following the incident. Ocean City Police confirmed that Bendy was processed by a Maryland District Court Commissioner and subsequently released on his personal recognizance. The case has raised questions about the implications of such behavior from a law enforcement official, particularly one in a position of authority. Further developments are awaited as the situation unfolds.
