General Motors Recalls Nearly All Cadillac Lyriq SUVs Over Brake Issues

General Motors (GM) has announced a significant recall affecting nearly all of its all-electric Cadillac Lyriq SUVs due to a critical brake system malfunction. The recall encompasses 21,469 all-wheel drive models from the 2023 and 2024 production years, representing approximately 95 percent of the 22,370 Lyriqs sold in the U.S. since the vehicle's launch in 2022. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that the anti-lock braking system (ABS) could activate unexpectedly, potentially leading to a loss of braking ability and increasing the risk of crashes. The issue arises from a software bug that causes the ABS to malfunction during specific braking scenarios, particularly on dry surfaces at speeds below 25 mph. If the ABS falsely activates, it may release brake pressure, resulting in reduced stopping performance or complete brake failure. GM has indicated that the recall will not impact rear-wheel drive Lyriqs, and estimates that only about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles may exhibit the ABS problem. To address the defect, GM plans to implement a free over-the-air software update, eliminating the need for owners to visit dealerships. The company has already prepared dealers to facilitate these updates, which are expected to begin later this month. Cadillac Lyriq owners will receive notification letters regarding the recall by September 23, 2024, and can reach out to Cadillac's customer service for further assistance.
