On May 16, 2025, Madhya Pradesh, India, announced its preparations for International Museum Day, which is celebrated globally on May 18 under the International Council of Museums. The state is set to honor the Guardians of Heritage, aligning with the day's theme, 'The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.' This event is a significant part of the Culture Department's efforts to highlight the importance of museums in preserving history and culture. The Directorate of Archaeology, Archives, and Museums in Madhya Pradesh is responsible for overseeing 497 state-protected monuments and 44 archaeological museums across various categories. This includes 7 state-level, 22 district-level, 9 local, and 6 site-level institutions. The aim is to celebrate its rich historical legacy and showcase the state’s commitment to conserving heritage through innovative practices. Madhya Pradesh has many renowned museums that contribute to the understanding of its cultural heritage. For example, the Dhar Museum, established in 1902, is one of the oldest archaeological museums in the state, recognized for its significant collection of historical artifacts. The Gujari Mahal Museum also stands out with an extraordinary range of items spanning from the 2nd century BCE to the 19th century CE, complemented by a vast library inclined towards archaeology and history. As part of its vision, the state is focusing on enhancing public access to museums through modern digital initiatives. This includes employing technologies such as 3D scanning of artifacts, VR-based interactive displays, and the installation of digital kiosks. These advancements aim to attract younger audiences and increase the accessibility of cultural assets, promoting a deeper appreciation and understanding of the heritage among the public.
